Three Ways to Look as Intelligent as You AreWhen discussing important topics with new – or existing – clients, you want to make sure you look like an intelligent, gifted, experienced businessperson. Even if you aren’t all of those things, you should look like you are anyway. But how can you do that if you aren’t? Check out the three tips below and start using them today when you discuss important subjects.

Use and Understand Counterexamples

Let’s say you have a client in front of you that is obviously and completely wrong about something. The last thing you want to do in this situation is actually say, “you’re completely and utterly wrong about this subject; here’s the truth of the matter.” Most people will take that as an insult to their intelligence. Instead, understand and use counterexamples. If someone says all poodles are white, simply point out that the AKC accepts brown and black poodles as well for showing.

Use Analogies Wisely

Analogies in school usually confused things further for students, but in the real world, they can be extremely useful. Instead of spelling out a complicated idea or business plan, use analogies so people can relate. For example, if you want to convince someone that it’s unintelligent to make someone else write their business plan, you can say “paying someone else to write your business plan is kind of like paying someone else to exercise for you.” Analogies will get the point across more vividly.

Question the Known

Don’t let people assume something is right or wrong. Find those assumptions, and help people rise above them. Letting them think that something they are saying is right when it is built on incorrect assumptions is both unwise and rude. Question people when appropriate to get them to the right ideas; don’t just correct them.
